I've really done my part as an American. Every Vehicle I have seen with a Republican or Bush / Cheney Bumper sticker on them and a yellow ribbon magnet. I carry a tube of super glue and glue their Yellow magnets to their new SUVs and full size Ford Pick ups so they wont fall off in a car wash.. God Bless America

A yellow ribbon symbolizes the idea that I will waiting for you upon your return. This is what it symbolized in the song and it is what it symbolizes now. This idea that all Conservatives are war mongers is just a fantasy. Conservatives desire an end to the conflict and death every bit as much as liberals. The differences comes from what the desired ends are. Conservatives desire an acceptable end, liberals desire an immediate end. Now we can debate what actually constitutes and acceptable end if you like, but liberals need to stop trying to trash everyone who doesn't agree with them using dishonest stereotypes. The same as conservatives need to stop classing liberals as unamerican or unpatriotic based on the same disagreements.

I am a Conservative with a yellow ribbon on a big tree outside and it is a wish for the troops to return safely! Got a problem with this?

According to the song, it means "I still want you, even though you've been in prison."

As a "surviror" of the 70s, the song lyrics are burned into my memory.

Somehow people started using the yellow ribbons during the Iranian hostage crisis, which was already changing the meaning. Perhaps in the sense of "we remember them" or "bring them home safely from captivity."

I suppose it means different things to different people now. Any original "official" meaning has been totally altered. Your interpretation is certainly not "wrong," as there are many out there and no objectively agreed one.

The odd thing about that whole "yellow ribbon" = patriotism thing is it started with a pop song about a guy coming home after being in PRISON for many years.

If you support the war so much, why haven't you enlisted? If everyone who cheers from the safety of the peanut gallery actually enlisted, we'd have the troops for the surge, plus an invasion of Iran.

Who ever said the conservatives do not want to bring the troops home?

Why is that assumed?
Conservatives want to bring the troops home, hon.
It's just that the liberals in their misquided compassion don't have the balls to soundly whip the butts of the rebellious world teenagers because momma liberal says we'll be too hard on them and damage their psyche thereby delaying the troops from coming home because the troops must be there to fix the damages done by the teenagers temper tantrums that occur because of momma's soft heart.

It is actually a Welsh thing, where Welsh folks could recognise where other Welsh communities are, when they landed and settled in America.

(They used to plant daffodils outside they're homes - but quickly moved to yellow ribbons).

It means nothing of the sort. It is a sign of loyalty and support for loved ones who are in harm's way, showing that you will be waiting for their return upon completion of their duties.

Of course, if you are a surrender monkey, you can interpret it as you would like, if you are so disposed. It's a free country.

No its means you're awaiting the return of a loved one. It doesn't mean stop the mission and bring everyone home.
