Check a public library first. Then you will know which are worth buying.

I get all my art self help books from thrift shops, library sales and a few off ebay. I also contacted a few of the kids from an artschool and asked to purchase used text books they'd had.

Try alibris.com, it has new and used books, some of the used books are a steal.
