I do not like either. If you want to train your horse get hands on advice from a local trainer. Parelli and John Lyon's trainers are available all over so if you want to start working with your new horse get someone to come to you instead of potentially not doing something right from watching the DVD.
There is no right or wrong way on how to train a horse and sometimes serious followers of trainers like Parelli and Lyons believe differently. Be open minded in your endeavour and do what is best for you and your horse.
Good luck and have fun!

Why are you even thinking you are qualified to train your horse when you don't have enough knowledge to evaluate a training tape?
John Lyons, Pat Parelli are commercial showmen. They perform for amateurs and make money, making people think they too can train their horse.
There is no substitute for knowledge. Educate yourself on equine history, equine psychology, riding disciplines, equine anatomy, diseases, and equine management.
Oh and while you are at it, learn about the bio-mechanics of equine movement, rider balance and alignment. Oh and while you are at it learn how a bit actually works on a horses mouth and how to use it correctly to communicate.
There are many more subjects you could study, but I hope you get the idea. Before you think about training a horse, know what you are doing or you can screw them up and create a problem which you won't be able to fix and the horse will be blamed for.
Do not think that your horse is your friend. Do not anthropomorphise your horse.(attribute to it human characterics) A horse is a very large animal which can hurt you in a single instant due to your ignorance. Often the horse gets the blame, just for being a horse.

I like John Lyons better. He makes his training methods easy to follow and understand for horse and trainer and he doesn't use a lot of gimmicks. I take what I like from each trainer to make a lesson that works best for me and my horse, but I usually find myself using most of Lyons methods. He seems to take a no nonsense approach to training, unlike some of the other trainers who like to use a lot of props and tricks. Some trainers even go so far as to setting the horse up for failure just so they can correct the mistake that they set them up for in the first place. I always try to work on things as they occur, and I never set my horse up to fail. There are a lot of good trainers out there and a lot of bad ones too. I would suggest getting some books from your local library. Then you can decide for yourself which trainer's methods would fit better with you and your horse.

I prefer pat parelli by leaps and bounds. his methods have shown awesome results..i don't know what others don't like..he is very kind to the horses, and seems to achieve results.
I find lyons a little too wishy washy..and too preachy.
Hey, i'm training my horse, not attending sunday services..I will get my sunday church services sunday at church thank you.
But honestly, the other posters are right..your best bet is to work with a trainer. you can explain and demonstrate a million times...but until you are working with a trainer, there can be things in your body language that you are missing and your horse isn't...since horses communicate primarily through body language, it is imperitive to be exacting...working with a trainer one on one can really help achieve the goals you want.
Ask to meet other people who have trained with them...meet their horses, ask what they liked and didn't like about the trainer and what was achieved with their horses.
(if you ask both liked and didn't like, you will generally get a more honest answer)
also, observe the trainer with other horses and other owners.
i've seen some horses majorly messed up by a trainer who was too strong handed, or too inclined to give up if their one method didn't work.

Both have their good and bad points. I agree that you should take your horse to a pro for at least 30 days. What you need to keep in mind is that not everything works for every horse. What I see is that the DVDs is that they are just a little to general. You will get a lot better start with a live trainer. And please do not just take the first trainer you can get. Make sure that you are comfortable with their teaching methods and their style fits with yours. Good Luck!

I journey English. yet I certainly have considered some issues that all and sundry of those 3 human beings do. And the only one I completely disliked grew to become into Parelli. additionally lots of the crap he does he stole from each physique else and says he made it up. John Lyons is amazingly properly consumer-friendly around right here. he's amazingly good together with his horses and he wont lie approximately stuff. Clinton Anderson is amazingly good. He is familiar with what he's speaking approximately and he shall we the pony comprehend what he's speaking approximately. And the those that do Parelli are constantly attempting to recruit you! It pisses me off. I knew those 2 very of course stupid lady's that have been given (2) 2 365 days previous mares and as we communicate started them on Parelli. all of them started Parelli on an identical time. They bred those mares on the age of three, nonetheless studying Parelli. the 1st time the only lady certainly have been given on her horse she bucked her off and he or she broke her hip. Neither of them exceeded the Parelli attempt. They left a month after their infant's have been born. They felt terrible approximately failing that attempt. and each physique made exciting of them for it. because of fact they have been impolite and might save their horses interior the turn outs for hours at a time and might tell human beings no you may no longer have that prove. and that they might take up the two greatest ones. those lady's of course had no consumer-friendly sense! I purely propose against Parelli. additionally he's amazingly impolite! He yelled at my pal in front of a gaggle of individuals. He has additionally been propose to his horses! Oh and in any respect his stupid shows he has horses that "he has in no way met in the previous that day" that comprehend all his instructions? somewhat? All horses will roll on the floor with you with out question? Hahaha your too humorous. and those huge balls!? what's that all and sundry approximately? It takes up 0.5 of their stalls and not one of the horses like the stupid ball anyhow! do purely no longer look like the beginner. good success
