how can the study of Western History of the last four centuries bind us rather than free us?

by "binds us", i mean how history tends to give us the wrong impression of what actually happened and how it highlights only the negative. by "free us", i mean the potential for change. can anyone also give me 3 examples each for "binds us" and "frees us" for events in western history over the last 4 centuries?

I would say it is only those who do not study History, whether it is Eastern or Western, that find themselves "binded" and not "free".
