I'm barefoot on the train almost every day going to work. But then again, bare feet that have been bare all day don't smell; if I'd been wearing closed shoes all day I would be less likely to take them off. Foot odor is caused by bacteria breaking down sweat in anaerobe circumstances (with lack of oxygen), as inside a closed shoe, so while I obviously don't have a problem with bare feet it can be better not to *get* bare in a small, crowded place when you have very sweaty feet... either keep them bare (or sandaled) or get to a place to wash them first. Taking very sweaty shoes off and smelling up the place would be bad manners.

I don't think it would be fair to the people around me if I took off my shoes because my feet might stink. If a person is in public and not on a beach, their shoes should be on their feet. And, it is easy to pick up all kinds of viruses and such when you don't wear your shoes.

If I am wearing my sandals I would take them off when I am on the bus.

Only if I was sure I didn't have a foot order problem and the people around me didn't mind.

A bad choice in shoes (ie. uncomfortable) does not negate good manners.
