At the time, appeasement seemed like a good thing. World War I was fresh in the minds of European leaders. They (the West) did not want to get into another war and by this time, Western leaders felt sorry for Germany. They realized that the Versailles Treaty that ended WW I & put the blame squarely on Germany's shoulders had been too harsh towards Germany. So Neville Chamberlain was willing to sacrifice Czechoslovakia rather than go to war. In hindsight, appeasement was a disaster. It just emboldened Hitler to make more demands for territory. World War II might have been avoided had the West stood up to Hitler over Czechoslovakia. At the time, the German military was not at full strength and Czechoslovakia actually had a pretty good army. Between the Czechs, France and Britain, they might have forced Hitler to rethink his plans for European domination.

Many countries in Europe wanted to appease Hitler so he would not attack them like he was doing to Poland and other countries. They made deals with Germany in hopes of avoiding conflict. Of course Hitler laughed all the way to the bank and invaded anyway. It was a huge violation of trust. It was not until he did the same to Russia and got himself into a war he was unprepared for due to the brutal conditions and an army that had already been worn too thin that the tide changed. Many European countries also tried to appease Hitler and not protest when the persecution of the jews first reared its ugly head. They basically turned the other cheek hoping that if they avoided confrontation on the issue with Hitelr that he would not invade their lands. Of course this was not the case as he attacked anyway and millions of jews were slaughtered. Appeasement is the act of trying to please a person, business, country in hopes that they will not do something you do not want them to do such as invade, make nuclear bombs, raise prices, murder someone etc etc. A prime example of modern appeasement was when the dolt Bill Clinton gave North Korea nuclear technology on a promise that, and in hopes that, they would use it only for peaceful purposes, not bombs. Clinton was duped as they turned around and did just what the US didn't want them to do and used our technology to make bombs.

Appeasment was giving in to a dictator to prevent war. France and England didn't want to start World War II and they thought Hitler might be satisfied with Austria and Czeckoslovakia. But they were wrong because then Hitler took Poland.

You are probably thinking of Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister who was a dupe. That was not the cause of WWII though it was Hitler's aggression and Japan bombing of Pearl Harbor.
