I have a Compaq 7360, and its processor is a AMD K6. I am wondering if my 500 ghz processor is equal to a Pentium 3 processor.

Your pentium 3 should spank all over the k6 processor. The K6 only had a 66Mhz front side bus, while the Pentium 3 had a 100-133 front side bus. This affects how data is moved to and from the RAM, and to and from the processor. Even if your AMD is slightly faster than you Pentium 3, it won't make much difference. The Pentium 3 features the next generation hardware, that the K6 didn't have until they released their Athlon chip.

The K6 was originally designed as a competitor to the Pentium 2 line of chips. Its technology was quite lack when compared to a P3, as Tim said.

Oh, and as far as "equality" like you asked, it would be equal to a Celeron processor of the time. Both were cheaper alternatives to the Pentium 2 chips.

A 500 MHz K6 could match the CPU integer speed of a Pentium III of the same MHz but would be around half the speed on scientific floating point calculations. The PIII L2 cache and RAM speeds would also be much faster.
