While the Cathedral is a church for the worship of God, the Cathedral did serve many functions. The Cathedral demonstrated the grandeur of God and the power of the State. Some Cathedrals took 200 years to build, so they became a state project, like the pyramids or moon landing, to unify the people into a single purpose. The Cathedral was meant to be awe inspiring in an age when the Church and State were not seperated and the religion was also politics.

Today most surviving Cathedrals are simply grand churches for the worship of God and no longer represent any State interests.
