From a man's perspective, I think that women are now getting preferential treatment over men. This is exaclty like affirmative action: If you're not a white male, there are opportunities out there you that you can grasp for free. However, most non-white and female people never want these things because all that affirmative action does is tell them that they need the government's help. I, for one, do not believe in affirmative action, including those for women. If women believe they are being treated unfairly, then they don't know the power that they possess. Seriously, if a man wants a promotion, he has to work hard every day and put his best foot forward. If a woman wants a promotion, all she has to do is flash her boss at the Christmas party. Get a raise, give a raise, I guess.

There still seems to be an issue.
Two friends of mine of the same race, different genders, got a job and had basically the same background and no familiarity with the job. They were both trained but the female has to work more hours and gets the minimum pay, the male works less hours and gets a higher pay.
I guess it depends where you go, some places are more extreme than others.

It probably depends on many different factors...especially different industries
And then we must also ask... fairly by whom?
-Is this a quantitative question.. because if so, in my field of study, university level philosophy, there is an amazing disparity in women and minorities working in academia in comparison to men.
-If it is a qualitative question... then it gets more complicated... and I really think it just depends on the industry. I also work in motorcycle sales and (as a woman) I definately notice the differences in regards to treatment, not so much by my co-workers (although finding a company to give me the chance was a whole different story), than by the customers that enter in the door.
I am optimistic however that as more and more women are working in different fields things will continue to change.

There is still a problem. Many employers, especially smaller companies, still don't see young women as good to employ as men. They are worried that the young woman might take 2 or 3 years off to have 2 or 3 children. They don't think women take their jobs seriously because of this and use it to themselves to justify lower pay, than a man, for the same work

Gosh, I don't know! I don't work in the "work place," I'm self employed & mostly a hermit, so I haven't a clue. Wait a minute. I think I heard that women aren't paid as much for the same jobs? & there's something else--sexual harrassment! If a man smiles at a woman, it's sexual harrassment, (sob sob) but not the other way around.

There is still a problem. I got passed over for a promotion for a job because I was told "they are going in another direction with that position" -even though I took on the responsibilties of the position before they found a new person-and I did it damn well too. Well the new direction is in the form of a MAN-and he does exactly what I did-but now he is also known as my boss.....it totally blows!

There will always be problems. People need jobs to have an income, and people working a lot of lower income jobs don't say much if they think things aren't fair for fear of loosing their job.
I once had a boss who quote: "Employees are a dime a dozen. If you don't like your job, find a new one."

Unfortunately, unless you own your own company, there are
still problems in the work place.
But not in my company, whether it's a female dispatcher or a male dispatcher, they still get 900.00 per week.
I also have male and female drivers, and their rate per mile is exactly the same !
I keep my work family happy ! And it works very well !
