If you run a fingernail down the row of teeth of
a comb you produce a sound very much like that
produced by many insects, and in about the same way. The commonest method of sound
production, called stridulation, is produced by a
row of hard ridges somewhere on the insect's
body, which is rubbed over by a hard ridge on
some other part of the body. These parts are
called the file and the scraper or pick. They may be on various body parts depending on the kind of insect.

Sound production by cicadas uses a different
method similar to the vibration of a drumhead.

The rubbing causes parts of their bodies to vibrate, such as their wings or legs. The vibration is like a guitar string, producing sound waves.
