Hey, I hear ya. I grew up in Chicago and moved to a small town in Nebraska a few years ago. The thing is, there *used* to be all kinds of stores there, then in comes the Wal-Mart. Within a few years, almost all of the smaller stores were wiped out, they couldn't compete.

The few stores that sell groceries, prescriptions, toiletries, clothing, etc., are *very* expensive. And if you live in a small town, chances are you're not making much money either because there's nowhere to work. You can spend $6.50 on a gallon of milk to satisfy those who oppose Wal-Mart, or you can afford both the milk AND the cereal to feed your kids.

I personally can't afford *not* to shop at Wal-Mart. The local grocery store is really for emergency purposes only because WM is about 15 miles away. But $17.00+ for milk, eggs, bread and a couple of rolls of TP is too much.

Anyone that thinks otherwise probably grew up where I did, within a 15 mile radius you have a WM, Target, three large-chain grocery stores, two or three pharmacies, two or three strip malls with small stores and a large shopping mall.

I live in Atlanta - a HUGE city, with many stores - lots of choices. So, although I don't HAVE to go to Wal-Mart I do because it's the only place where groceries, everyday clothes, etc. are reasonably priced. Why should I go to Kroger, Publix, etc. and pay a fortune when I can go to Wal-Mart and stock my entire kitchen - cupboard, freezer, refrigerator within budget? Prices at other grocery stores are exorbitant! YES, sometimes they have a few items on sale - Kroger is famous for having 10 for 10 sales, but do I really need 10 cans of Hunt's Tomato Sauce?
I go to Wal-Mart for my big grocery trip each week or two and use Publix and Kroger for incidentals.

lucky, at least you have a walmart, all my town has in a food store, a gas station, and a little cafe. I really don't think that is consider a hick town if you only have a walmart there. Come to my town that will show you a hick town, we have 1000 people living in it, everyone that lives there deal with farming one way or another, and kids in my high school drive tractors to school. Did i mention that we don't have any stop lights, only stop signs. And the mall and target is about a 2 hour drive and walmart is about an hour drive away. The only radio station we have around here are country stations.

We don't even have a Wal-Mart, or a grocery store. We are lucky to have a Post Office, 2 Gas Stations, and a Cafe. We have to travel to the next town for groceries and Wal-Mart........
I hate Wal-Mart!!!!

In my town we don't even have Wal Mart. We have to drive to the next town over just to be able to get to Wal Mart. The only chain we have is Rite Aid and Advanced Auto Parts, so when I get to go to Wal Mart I get all excited. But I don't mind.

I LOVE WAL MART - AND K MART. I'm from the UK and when I'm in the USA or Canada make special trips to either of the stores - I also like Target - the clothes are SO CHEAP - especially with the currency conversion...

That sucks. I probably live near at least 30 Wal-mart within a 50 mile radius, one within 10 min walking distance.

Yeah. I know it's kind of scary, too. I didn't see the question you're referring to, but I assume that someone's on a soap-box about Wal-Mart. The thing is...IT"S CHEAP!! And, I'm sorry, it's not my fave place, either, BUT, when I am short on cash and need stuff, that's where I go. And if it was the only store within 50 miles, it's DEFINITELY where I would go.

And even your town is lucky to have Wal-mart. Some towns just have the 99 cent store.

OK with me. I am a Wal Mart Queen. I buy almost everything there. I missed Sweetie's question. What is her beef with Wally World?
