Nearly all the PC guys that I work with claim that, all software issues aside, a computer's hardware gets slower with age. Does the hardware - such as CPU, memory, hard drive - really get slower as the years pass? Obviously due to the laws of nature, everything deteriorates, but will a 3 Ghz CPU eventually start performing more like 2 Ghz; will DDR2-800 RAM slow down to DDR2-667 over time; will my 7200 RPM hard drive start to act more like a 5200 RPM drive in years to come?

No. Unless something goes mechanically wrong with a part, the computer should continue to operate at "full speed". The one exception is that a hard drive can begin to deteriorate with time. The writing and rewriting can reduce the charge on the platters. When the happens, the drive usually dies with in a matter of days (or minutes).

But beyond that, the rest of the hardware should continue to function at full speed.

Actually the answer is no. It only look slow because the current trend is the computer is getting faster thru time. Off course, with some application loading, it will really slows down your PC as it keeps on eating resources like ram and space (also clutter on hard disk).

the only reason why ur pc will slow down with age is because of advanced software needing more resouces. it would be like putting office 2007 on a windows millenium pc, it would run slow because it has'nt got enough ram to run the software.if you keep using software within your pc's resources it will stil run as fast as it did brand new

Not true. I have an old 700Mhz PC with 768MB ram and it runs as fast as my new 3Ghz computer. Although it cannot burn dvds(requiring 1Ghz), and play new games(needing more ram, processing power, etc.), its reliable and has yet to deteriorate. It runs like a charm, much more reliable than computers today.

computers don't slow down with age, they just get quicker as new components are released... so your pentium 4 2ghz will still perform like it did when you got it, its just technology advancing!
