The Gambia is a newly, evolving tourist hotspot - there are excursions available to visit the native villages there, some beautiful beaches and great wildlife.

If you need more information on local times there, and weather and climate etc visit www.worldatlas.com

I went about 5 years ago. I was surprised by how undeveloped it was. Apart from a fairly small strip of modern hotels and bars in the main town, it's still very basic, and I didn't feel entirely comfortable there, as it was hard to tell whether the locals were genuinely friendly or just wanted the tourist money (they make it clear they want you to spend, spend, spend, which is also not a very comfortable feeling). The hotels warn tourists not to go outside of the hotel complexes, which kind of added to that feeling, but of course, it's in their interests to keep you indoors as you spend money in their bars! If you do venture further afield, it's quite interesting but as I say very basic (but a LOT cheaper than eating and drinking in the hotels).
