Actually West Indies are D1 and Ireland are D2. Hence according to the official draw, the next match should have been with Australia and Ireland. I am also totally confused as to why first match is being played between Australia and West Indies.

The team which carries most points from any group to Super 8 , will be 1.for eg,West Indies carried most points from group D so they are D1 and Ireland finished secind so they are D2.
So the fist match between D2 and A1 is actually between Australia and Ireland.

As of April 2005 the ratings of all the teams were decided and they were put in the groups. Their rankings are given in bracket as per April 2005.
Group A St Kitts & Nevis
Aus (1)
SA (5)
Scotland (12)
Hollland (16)
Group B Trinidad & Tobago
SL (2)
India (8)
Bangladesh (11)
Bermuda (15)
Group C St. Lucia
NZ (3)
England (7)

Now here only it was decided beforehand that top 2 teams should qualify for super 8.
So Aus was A1,SA was A2......whoever tops the group.
Similarly
SLwas B1,IND was B2......whoever tops the group.
NZ was C1,Eng was C2......whoever tops the group.
Pak was D1,WI was D2......whoever tops the group.
Now whichever team replaces them wil have same notation.
Thus Bangladesh became B2....
And Ireland became D1......
Put these everywhere and picture wil be clear. Thats the rule mentioned.

the big teams went into the world cup with there names i.e A1, A2 etc. pakistan was D1 and west indies was D2. therefore sicne ireland took pakistans place in the super 8 they become D1 and west indies remain D2. and the same applies with the india group.
