Diamonds are exceedingly hard. If they fail it is when being cut. Unless you can show that there was a defect in the diamond you have no comeback on the dealer. Guarantees are for defects not damage.
The most likeliest cause is that your ring was brought into contact with a hard surface at sometime whilst it was being worn.
A car is guaranteed for defective parts but not if you crash it - same scenario here unfortunately.
Don't waste your time on the dealer. Try claiming on your insurance.

What shape is the diamond? Where is the diamond chipped? Is it chipped at a clevage angle, or on a flat facet? What is the diamond bond policy of the jeweller?
Some diamonds are more prone to chipping than others. Almost always, a diamond chips at one of the angle/vertex of two facets. If you hit a diamond with enough force at one of those sharpe meeting points of facets, then yes, it is possible. It happens, and in my eight years in the business I have seen it happen many times.

Yes a diamond can chip if hit hard enough, that is how they cut diamonds.
If it is insured, you can get reimbursed for the loss value.

If you're in the UK, your local Council will have a Trading Standards Department. If you think the damage to the ring was caused by an inherent defect, you could take it to the TS Dept and see what they think ... it's free.
