San Francisco is in Northern California and not even close to Mexico. You might want to take a day trip to Marin County which is just across the Golden Gate Bridge. Maybe go hiking on Mount Tam (Tamalpais) or visit the Muir Woods. There are tour busses that can get you there.
As for beaches, this isn't anything like Southern California. It can be rugged and windy along the coast, but check out Stinson Beach. You could also take a 1-2 day trip down to Carmel or Monterey, but that's at least a two hour drive.

I'd use trip advisor. There are a couple of beaches in San Francisco. One is baker beach- which is a mile long with great views of the Golden Gate bridge.
Depending on when you are going, keep in mind that SF can get cold, especially in the summer due to the fog. Wear lots of layers as the temp will change throughout the day.
Las vegas and LA are both about an 1 1/2 flight away for warmer weather and you could always do a tour of the wine country which is beautiful. I wouldn't bother with Mexico on such a short trip...
SF is a nice walking city and very beautiful with excellent food. Make sure you eat a lot of mexican food!

Mexico is right out. San Diego is a trolley ride to Mexico, but you'll need to take a plane from SF.
While you're here, be sure to see SF from the Marin Highlands. Go over Golden gate Bridge, take the exit after the rest area (I forget its name) - left turn will bring you under the highway and then first exit on right brings you up the Marin highlands which to serve as WWII look out posts. Best view of SF and the Golden gate bridge.
BTW, Sausalito is the next town up from the Golden gate bridge - that may worth a day.
Bring your roller blades and do Golden Gate Park all the way down the Beach.
Twin Peaks is also supposed to have the best view of SF. So is Angel Island.
Check out a SF Giants game if they are playing - some people sit in the stadium - others float outside in kayak waiting to catch a Barry Bonds HR.
Lots of beer bars. Check out North Beach Pizza - roasted garlic.
Under the Golden gate bridge is an old fort - and a great wind surfing beach.
When you go to Coit Tower - you'll see a stop sign at the top of the driveway - look to the right and you'll see a sidewalk - walk down that side walk - there are houses with fabulous gardens hidden from view - you'll feel like you've seen a secret city in SF. The walk will talk you all the way down to the Piers - take a left and you'll end up at Fisherman's Wharf.
A warning about our homeless people - they are aggressive!
Here's the website for the SF Chronicle newspaper - they'll probably have links to other stuff: www.sfgate.com
Go to your library and see if they have a Let's Go SF book - it will be packed with youth hostel and other site info.
SF has a 49 mile Scenic View drive - signs point you all the way around SF.
Alcatrez. Cliff House. Haight-Ashbury (homeless alert - and it's gone corporate). Castro - while there check out the City Hall rotundra.
BART and Muni will get you everywhere you want to go.

Have fun!

San Fran isnt known for its beaches but if you travel a bit further down the coast it gets better (obviously LA has some great beaches).
By greyhound, it took me (from memory and it was 6 years ago!) 10 hours from SF to LA and Mexico is even further. However, you could think about an flight from SF once you get there? Think generally theyre quite cheap.
If you're going to SF to meet people etc, then fair enough. If not, id consider renting a car and just driving down the coast from SF and finding the beaches a long the way....
Or if theres no specific reason for SF, id choose La or Vegas for chilling out/ rewarding yourself for your hard work! Santa Monica is beautiful and Vegas is brilliant: chill by the pool all day, party at night.
Hve fun regardless!!

Hey!
I attend Uni in San Francisco, so hopefully I can help!
The coastline in and around San Francisco is beautiful, but the cool wind chill from the Pacific makes it almost impossible to swim without a wet suit. Bon fires on the beach at night are really popular. During the day kite flying and beach patrolling is popular. You can catch a cab or bus (#5) which will take you straight to Ocean Beach.
Stinson Beach is the most swimable beach in the Bay Area, you'll need to rent a car to get there though.
San Francisco is more about its nightlife, restaurants, shopping, culture etc.
San Diego is California's beach capital.
If you need to know anything else, hit me up!

You could chill on the beach at Santa Cruz just a bit South West of SF on I17. Mexico is not really on the radar, it's about 500mi+ South unless you are planning to go to LA in which case it's only a couple of hours drive from there. Although the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) is good you really ought to look into cheap car hire. When you've finished chillin' try Great America amusement park or Raging Waters Theme park near San Jose to get the adrenaline going again.

Mark Twain is commonly credited with the quote "the coldest winter I 've ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco." Many years ago, I visited San Francisco carrying several different colored t-shirts and 1 sweatshirt. I ended up wearing the sweatshirt every single day. There are beaches in SF, but it can be cool and ppl wear sweatshirts and sweaters there. Mexico is close to SAN DIEGO, but SF is about a 12 hour drive from San Diego. If you like Mexican culture, there are Mexican restaurants in the Mission district of SF. Are you from the UK? Though you are most welcome to visit SF, why not visit other cities in the UK? Grand old buildings, beautiful countryside, all kinds of restaurants-- going to the UK on vacation is a dream for many Americans.

Be treated to an memorable San Francisco experience and find why you need to visit that city with hotelbye . In San Francisco you are able to go to the famous Golden Gate Bridge how was after named "the connection that couldn't be built" and how is today one the seven wonders of the current world. That spectacular link is San Francisco's most popular landmark. In San Francisco you can even visit the Lombard Street. Usually named the “crookedest” block on earth, that lovely street on Russian Hill features restricted turns, fresh gardens and wonderful views of the bay and Alcatraz. San Francisco happens to be a city that will amaze you and where you could have an ideal holyday.
