I think India is a country full of intrigue and mystery, but I am saddened by the child prostitution.

I the description that trickyrick32 gave. I've never been there but would love to go, and his insight is much appreciated.
What do I think? I find it intriguing. I know that severe poverty is a way of life for many, and visitors should understand that before getting there. I love the music, the foods, the arts, the fashions (clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc), the people (those that I've known so far), and the aromas of the spices... mmm! I would LOVE to go, especially when they have this festival where they honor the cobra. Wow, what a treat it would be to participate! I'd love to see the Taj Mahal and gardens of Shalimar. Oh yes, and the Baha'i Temple there in Delhi. I'm a Baha'i, and have chatted with some Indians who've said they've been there, and that it's a very beautiful, peaceful place. I really wanna go.
Ah yes, when I go, I will get the henna tattoos on my hands/arms and feet/legs, done in a salon preferably there and not here. And I definitely gotsta get me some saris and head & face jewelry. I have a nose piercing, so this would be perfect. Cool!

I've been there on holiday a few years back with some friends.
Well, about 12 years ago actually, but i dont want to sound too old :)
It's a wonderfull place.
If you want the five star, swanky treatment, there's loads of top class hotels etc. But to see the REAL India you need to rough it a bit. there's plenty of cheap accomodation out there and it costs only a few quid to stay for the week.
It's a very colourfull, friendly, busy and vibrant place.
Dont expect a McDonalds on every street corner. There basic people who live there life by there meager means and you have to expect and respect that before going.
The market places are ten a penny and well worth a visit.
the smells and colour are fantastic.
WORD OF WARNING....take plenty of medication and get lots of health insurance. Dodgy belly's galore i'm afraid. There are lots of shots need as well, make sure your fully upto date. Only drink bottled water and pre packed foods if you can help it.
The food is wonderfull, but not always the most hygenic.

Bit of a culture shock if you are a bit delicate, especially in the big cities where abject poverty is rife. However it is an amazing and dizzyingly jumble of vibrant life and filled with living history. The people are a wonderful mix of cultures, colours and languages. The climate is varied too. Try and avoid the Monsoon period though, it is no fun. Southern india is my favourite, Kerala is truly amazing. You can stay in really cheap accommodation or Western style luxury. You must visit before you die

India is a densely populated country. It has produced many generations of highly intelligent people who have been an asset, not only to India but to other countries where they have established themselves in business and sciences.
However, the continuation of the caste system, where some are deemed to be 'untouchables' has produced a wide social divide.
There are many living in exceptionally poor conditions.
It is for India itself to solve their own internal affairs.

Couldn't say, have never been there. My parents have been to Goa a few times and they think its fabulous.
As for the culture, all I really know is some of those saris the women wear are absolutely gorgeous; and how can you say anything bad about the place that gave us Tikka Masala! Yes. I know there is a lot more to the Indian culture than their food.(Sorry it's a bit vague, but I"m a newby and need a few points!)

They need to make a greater effort to get into the 21st century. The caste system has got to go so everyone can be educated.
