Austin is a great place to live/retire. There's TONS of stuff to do, places to go, people to meet and food to eat here! As far as Real Estate is concerned, I have a friend that moved here from Cali and she says that "The houses are so freakin' cheap here!". Hope that helps answer your question. And as far as the night life goes, Austin is the BEST place on the face of this planet to party! When you get here stop by any HEB store and pick up a free copy of the Austin Chronicle. Look in the entertainment section for all of the live events that will be taking place. Its published every Thursday and located by the entrance/exit of the store.
*Our City's moto is "Keep Austin Wierd." So don't be suprised if you're crusin' down Congress and see a White guy in a pink thong waving to ya. His name is Leslie,he's completely harmless!

I don't have as much experience with the area as you might like in an answer but I can tell you that after only one visit I was ready to move there. I've been in contact with a real estate agent and as far as good investments go she says that the east side isn't the best. However, that being said, there are a few up and coming areas on the east side. Check out the Mueller Project.
In Austin there isn't JUST nightlife there are a million activities in the day time too. There are festivals constantly. Aside from the obvious: sixth street, Univ. Texas, and live music venues all the time, there are also numerous parks and lakes nearby.
In my research, I've found that Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in America. Jobs, economy, and real estate are all on the rise. I apologize, I read this online in the last three months and cannot find the site to direct you to it.
Have fun! I can't wait to move!

I think the poster directly above me didn't see the "retire" part. I don't think you'll be spending a lot of your time in trendy bars on 6th Street, but I might be wrong. There are a lot of festivals here, the zoo is pretty good for a town of its size, but Austin is driven by two things: students from University of Texas, and leftist 70s envirowacko retreads. If you fit into one group or the other then Austin is your kind of place. If not, Austin has many nice suburbs north of town in Williamson County (home to Dell Computer, among others). It is the state capitol, but no one seems to remember.
Austin real estate has been on the rise (both of my brothers live in the area), but one brother thinks it may be close to topping out as the overall market softens. The other said, "Ya got me!"

Austin truly has is one of the best quality of life places to live or visit. No matter the age, race or sexual orientation! But it's getting sort of crowded, so check somewhere else out as well... he he he
