the recommendation is rest and pain relief for the first 48 hours then very carefully /slowly start to move about .muscles etc are on a use it or lose it basis . so take your time but don't need to lay on board or hard floor.

go to the doctor for pain relief and then go to physio. i did this and mine was cured after a fortnight. You will need to have time off work sick if you have a physically demanding job that involves alot of manual handling.

My doc and physio told me NOT to lay down all day but to keep active

Check with your doctor.
The additional habit that you would have to create would be to learn to sleep on a hard surface without a pillow. This really helps in the long term.

Some doctors tell you to lie in bed. Some tell you to exercise. If you feel pain, you should take it easy and not exercise. As soon as the pain diminishes you should do some exercise, such as swimming or yoga. Don't lift anything you don't have to.

go to the hospital then see a back doctor then lay in bed all day and have some one wait on you hand a foot. heard it really really hurts. most people have to get surgery. good luck with that....
