something controversal b/c contreversy sells, i.e. the da vinci code. research topics ppl have a hard time dealing with, politics and religion and write a sesnsational story that could be true. try the govt plotting to carry out a massive attack on it's own ppl to justify a fictious war. oh sorry the bush admin already turned that into reality tv. or research the conspiracy theories, see if there might be any truth in it and then cal it the book "thoughts on various things" and open some ppl's eyes.

Writers write about things they are comfortable with and are interested in. Many authors research their stories to have accurate story lines and history. Of course, if you write children's books you can use some imagination.
I like to read books about Scotland's history mixed with a little romance :). Also, Australia should be researched and written about as a romance story as my husband is Australian. I haven't seen many books where the storyline for a romance novel is in Australia. You could be opening up a new venue there.

Horror. About a guy who goes into an old tenement looking for a serial killer who kills people there, only to discover that the building is, in fact, possessed and is killing the people.

You should ask for their permission so as not to be in breach of copyright or being accused of plagiarism. If they give their permission then its perfectly fine. If you dont know who or cant find the author then add something like "credit to author (unknown) no copyright breach intended".

It doesn't really matter, just write what you know. If someone else tries to tell you your subject matter, you won't be believable without really knowing your topic, anyway.
