The MBA is a master's degree -- but it is considered a terminal professional degree. In general, it is not a degree that prepares you for a PhD.

A PhD in Business Administration comes in many flavors. A lot of students getting a PhD in Management may get an MBA first -- but often have done graduate work in other fields -- like Psychology, as well.

Most PhD candidates in Finance, on the other hand, have done graduate work in mathematics, physics or economics before entering their program. Of the 24 people in my PhD program in Finance only a couple of us also had an MBA. Both of us had also done graduate work in Economics and Mathematics before applying.
