An average human being can go up to 2 minutes underwater before coming out to breath, but I can probably stay about 1 minute and a half underwater.

Hi,
Well this depends if you are doing it in Static or in Dynamic...

Normally you can easily reach up to 3 to 4 minutes but for this you need some training before and you need SOMEONE NEXT TO YOU WHEN YOU TRY THIS!!!!!

There are different breathing techniques and relaxation techniques that can be used for that, (YOGA etc...)

A interesting book that I can advice you is the following:

Manual of Freediving
Umberto Pelizarri
Stefano Tovaglieri

distributed by CG Idelson Gnocchi,

www.idelson-gnocchi.com

I think that this is the best book about learning the different techniques how to improve you breath holding, a good advice is that you take a freediving course with a professional, you will for sure enjoy it and you will really learn a lot during the course.

For me I am holding my breath for 4 minutes and 32 seconds, and I was really bad at it before...

Do it safely!
Have a nice day...be smart!

In swimming races, you are limited by the distance you can travel under water, not by the time you spend there. It's easy enough to swim 50m under water, but you will get DQ'd.

If you want to stay under for a while, take some bottled air with you.. seems to work best in my experience... and you can stay down there for an hour or so.
