Well actually humans are animals, and we have already taken over the world. To be taken over by something else, I would have to say a deadly virus. But that is not technically an animal or even alive. So cockroaches will probably be the living organism that ends up taking over, if we have a nuclear war.

Parasites and Viruses, they have an adaptability that goes beyond comprehension. Cockroaches aren't actually animals, but they also have a resistance that is very high on the charts. The most fascinating are viruses simply because they are able to reinvent themselves in whatever host they happen upon. So many are no longer specific to one species of animal, such as the avian flu, AIDS, and the list goes on. Let us all hope that these adaptable living organism continue to need a host. Their independence would be our undoing. Kind of like one of those lame Sci-Fi movies.

Dogs; and they are working harder on it right now by making sure their owners treat them as human. Entire aisles in grocery stores and supermarkets are for their needs. They get pampered in pet stores, expensive leashes are bought just for them. The vets are a big business with vitamins, pills, surgeries.
They have pet cemeteries, pet shows, pet clothes.
One cannot be left wandering the streets, he must have a home and a licence.
Think about it, dogs have taken over the world. The only reason they don't do more is they don't know how to read or write.

Squids, Cuttlefish and Octopuses. These marine cephalopods are very intelligent, i can say. They have over dozens of ways to catch prey, live and defense. They have dominated the world since the Cambrian period and continue till present day. They never stop evolving and some are amphibious as they can live out of water for half a day, surely thousands of years later, they will evolve to adapt on land.

Cockroaches, if we don't nuke ourselves off the planet first. They have amazing adaptations that allow them to survive just about anywhere and they can even go a week after being decapitated--the only reason they die is because of dehydration.
