It seems that somebody doesn't pay attention to Friday Night SmackDown.
Chavo Guerrero, Gregory Helms, and Jimmy Wang Yang are currently the top contenders for the Cruiserweight Championship, and last I checked, 250lbs. is too heavy to even compete in the Cruiserweight Division. Furthermore, the combined weight of SmackDown's tag team champions is less than that of Viscera by himself (I would say The Great Khali instead of Viscera, but it's possible that Paul London and Brian Kendrick weigh more than 430lbs.).
On RAW, there's this incredibly-insane superstar who draws his name from his being both adjectives. He's super, he's crazy, he's Super Crazy.
What about the (not so) new ECW? RVD, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, C.M. Punk, and Elijah Burke don't look like they're 250+lbs. I'm uncertain about the actual weight of Dreamer and Burke, but I know the others in this paragraph are in the 220-240 weight range.

Well they have the Cruiserweight division with Chavo as champ. The US belt traditionally has smaller guys as champ like the current holder Chris Benoit.
Rey Mysterio was featured prominently til his knee injury & he weighs less than 250 lbs.

that's not true. Rey Mysterio weighed only 165 lbs when he won the World Heavywheight Championship. And all the divas are between 100-150lbs. Think about it.

Its sad yes, but there are a few main-eventers in the WWE nowhere near 250lb such as Shawn Michaels who is about 200lb max, Rey Mysterio about 160lb.
Slowly but surely the day of only having the 6'5 300lb guy as champ in changing. People as in non smarks are still more interested in seeing the big muscled guy rather than the 5'6 160lb talented wrestler, but hopefully this will change in time, hopefully :)

my point in this is that actually the majority of the WWE roster is under 250lbs. but in the WWE to be succesful and as light as 140lbs you would need to be pretty short so you are still pretty well built. the WWE actually has a height restriction which vince waived for rey mysterio. it does not happen often though as you guess. most of the lightest guys are also total high flyers. but some of the guys in the WWE who are heavier have the ability to high fly as well. i have seen an old video of batista in his early wrestling days, almost as big as he is now and he was doing back flips off the top rope. RVD is one of the most agile guys in the WWE and he is 230+lbs. size is important people want the huge guy that is indestructible but they also want the little guy who just wont quit.

Simply put. Vince has never been big on the lightweights. After all the success WCW had with them. The fans loved it, but it just wasn't his thing. The X division in TNA came along and had some success, but still Vince wouldn't go along with it. I honestly don't know why they have the lightweight title in WWE if he is never going to use it right.
Basically with the history of wrestling in America it has been geared to promote bigger guys. That's what the fans have gotten used to, and that is for the most part what they want to see. Basically the WWE is not a Lucha Libre federation. Its not about who has the most "gymnastic skills", but who actually looks like they could kick another guys ***. At much as fans love seeing the little guys at the end of the day they still want to see the big guys bring the hurt.
With the history of wrestling honestly most fans wouldn't be interested in seeing a lot of weight classes like in boxing. They're just two different monsters.
WWE just tries to do what put fans in the seats, or fans watching at home. For most wrestling fans that's big guys beating up on each other.
I would love to see the WWE at least use the weight class like WCW did, but even that with Vince is asking too much. With all the lightweights he could have used for just that division alone he still used it as a second class division even though the paying fans love to see the little guys go.
