The "butcher" Jayasuriya or Sri Lanka holds the record for scoring the fastest 50 in the history of one day cricket when he hit 50 of just 17 deliveries in the singer cup final played at Singapore. He had, three days earlier, scored the fastest hundred of the ODI history on 48 balls against the same opponents but that record could not last long as Shahid Ali Khan Afridi of Pakistan smashed 102 of 37 balls against Sri Lanka at Nairobi the same year i. e 1996 and Jayasuriya came under a lot of stick when he bowled to Shahid Afridi who was playing his only second ODI and that was his first innings as a batsman as he could not bat in the first match.
