Hi Alex.
You see, your question is interesting from the linguistic point of view, but from the philosophical one, it does not say much thing. You see:
If I have something to say to someone, then I have to say it to that person. If I have to say something to someone, then I have something to say to ... You see, it is circular.
Of course you knew it. That's why you did the job of making it a question...
So, I had something to tell you when I glanced your question; after that something came to my mind and then I had two things: one was to say it to you and another the content of what I was to say.
So this is it. Your question is really interesting...

It depends.
There are days I don't want to say a word especially when I'm at work but I have to say something.
Other times I have something to say.
I always have in mind a saying:
"If you can't say anything clever better don't speak at all".... This doesn't mean that I say always clever things, I have my moments of "stupidity"...

You have to say something when you relate information from a third party, you have something to say when it comes from you and has'nt been heard before.
