Plenty of people love classical musicians. You need to be less narrow-minded.
With young people especially, it is not 'cool' to like classical music, but that doesn't mean they don't really like it. I'm 18 and I have seven classical albums on my iPod.

where do you think rock music came from? Out of jazz? Okay, where'd that come from?
the number of different styles of Western ( as in European) classical music puts to shame the number of different "genres" in the modern scene today. As Sarah pointed out, every generation has its special sound, and we find that in Classical music as well. ( as a matter of fact, "classical" is actually just one of those specialty names.)
It started out as an expensive business, and remains an expensive business. So is rock, I agree.
but when you go on tour with your favorite band, and you count up just the musicians, not the techies, roadies, managers, and support staff, you don't have that many people. when you go on tour with an orchestra, you start with about 65, so expensive takes on a different dimension.
If you've got all the singers with you as well, and you put on a show ( called an opera), you may have about 150 people performing all at once.
Also, up until about 100 years ago, if you wanted music, you went out to find it. There were no computers, no MP3s, no Cd's, no cassette recorders, and recordings were just starting to exist. Music as a hobby wasn't easy to come by, and the stars were just as venerated as the ones today.
I think you might want to learn some perspective and lose some smugness. However, if it doesn't happen now, it'll take about 25 years till you catch on, so don't worry, be happy.

Lots of people care about classical music. I guarantee every music teacher cares about classical music. As a music teacher, I see it my duty to give people an awareness and respect for it (whether they like listening to it or not). If it weren't for the classics, music wouldn't be where it is today.
For those who listen to the classics get a better ear-full than those who listen to pop/rock/country from the 50's-present. The music may sound different from decade to decade, but all of the songs have a maximum 4-5 different chords in it. If you'd analyze classical music there are sometimes 100's of different chords on different levels. It's more interesting!

Because classical music isn't shoved down our effing throats like the teenie pop music found on mtv and vh1. Classical music is good four the soul and it doesn't fill your mind with crap and garbage. I enjoy hip hop, pop, and the rest of the garbage the majority listens to, but once in the while I like to seek tranquility with classical music.

Because it's easy to understand rock music and more difficult to understand classical music.
Kinda like why fast food is more popular than organic, nutrient-dense slow food.
Fast food is cheaper than good food; rock music is easier to 'get' than classical music.
