a mixture of water that has 12 keV phtons.
Weight fractions of Hydrogen and Oxygen are 2/18 are 16/18 respectively.

thus the net aborption coefficient is
U = (0.045 * 2/18) + (0.283 *16/18)

I dont understand where 0.045 and 0.283 come from? Help please!

please if it is possible for you, if you could show me how to get from 12keV into 0.045 (m2 /kg) that would be much appreciated

They are the absorption coefficients for pure hydrogen and oxygen alone respectively.

I suspect that you aren't supposed to derive the attenuation coefficients of Hydrogen and Oxygen. They're probably in a table in your book somewhere. I think you're just being asked to calculate the overall coefficient using the given coefficients and the weight fractions.
