I'm considering the purchase of an existing storefront that include a message board. I've never worked in this arena before.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Complete E-Commerce Book: Design, Build, and Maintain a Successful Web-Based Business by Janice Reynolds
* Intelligent Selling: The Art & Science of Selling Online by Ken Burke

Is it a brick and mortar or an online business, I am confused by the question. Online biz is great, but the advertising is a litle tricky. You have to exchange banners and advertise in newspapers and other online sites. Good luck.
