United Nations is an institution in human history to work for peace. There is no doubt that it has made great contribution to world peace. Security Council five permanent members have veto power as it was felt that without veto power these countries would not joint the United Nations. Humanitarian work of UNO is quite impressive. The impression that it is quite ineffective is not based on reality.

It was created at the end of WWII. Prior to the war the League of Nations existed, having been created at the end of WWI with the idea of fostering discussion among nations in an attempt to avoid the type of war that WWI was. Obviously the League didn't work; the prime example is when Japan withdrew from it after their invasion of China in '37.
Creating the UN was supposed to help maintain peace. WWII was a pretty nasty deal and it brought the world into the atomic age; people realized another war like that could mean the end of us.

The UN was created for the good of mankind in planet of apes.
The problems was the men who would be king in their monkey suits were making a mess for themselves living in misery with communication problems in one new universal language and one speech in planet of apes.
Ever wonder how they were communicating in ghostly kitchen's dialect from the graveyards of ancestor's custom with misinterpretation, miscommunication, communication failures and communication break-down sleeping on their job too in making a monkey out of themselves in planet of apes.
While those back home waited and waited for them to come back with the fishing line, hooks and sinkers all came home empty handed but with all their personal shopping for themselves at the expense of those poor children living in misery back home in planet of apes.
