Totally agree - anyway how can they be legends until they are at least 40 years old! The two you mentioned are more like Prima Donna's

Too early to give this accolade.
You cannot say a player is a legend until after their career has finished. Even then it is subjective.
George Best yes a great player.
Maradonna?? wouldn't agree with you there.
If Ronaldo and Rooney continue to play as they are, then I expect that in 50 years time they will be regarded as legends, and perhaps be mentioned in the same breath as Puskas and Finney etc.

Absolutely.

Your question reminds me of a response that was uttered by the actress Lauren Bacall. While being interviewed by a twenty-something reporter employed by a television magazine, the interviewer asked Lauren how she regarded a legend like Nicole Kidman. She responded: "Legend? What has she done to be a legend?"

I feel like you do. Its like the phrase "I love you" which has been thrown around too freely and its meaning is lost upon the younger minds.

I consider myself very fortunate to have seen the likes of Maradona, Pele, Best, et al perform at the peaks of their careers. It is because they performed their magic so long ago that they have become legends. You know as well as I that the term is earned, and applied once a career is over.

I absolutly agree. Legends are players like Pele, Zidane etc. The word Great is also totally over used, and world class is to.

Yeah I agree. Surely a legend has finished his career, achieved a great deal either with his team, through individual honours or as an ambassador for the game.

I called would be legends.... leg-ends (they're got to get rid of the hyphen to be a legend ha ha ha)

Dead right mate. The "world class" phrase is what annoys me. Where was Ronaldo a year ago? Suddenly he's world class. Don't get me wrong he's had a good season but he's not wolrd class. Look at how many goald Rooney has scored for England within the last year. Not many!

i totally agree, i mean the "legends" have not even retired yet so how can they be labeled as legends already. don't get me wrong i know that these people can play but let us just stick to calling the retired or people that have been in the industry for much longer the real "legends"

Definitely over-used and Rooney's reputation(based on games played as a 17 year old) exceeds his actual performances now.

Only history determines legends except those in their own minds. Yes it is over used, just as much as "super".
