A friend bypassed the fan switch so the fan is on all the time and it did not overheat when I took it for a short run. The car is a SAAB 9000 turbo, 12 years old with 130000 miles on the clock.

130000 isn't big milage for a saab, though a few simple things can be checked.
Bypassing the fanswitch prooves the fan, relay and fuse are ok. Now check your water level is that good? Start your car from cold, after about 10 mins the hot water should begin to flow through the radiator, you can tell by feeling the top and bottom hoses, if the bottom hose is still cold or much cooler than the top hose then the thermostat is stuck shut or the radiator is blocked, if these are ok then i would be changing the fan switch.
You can also double check the relay just to be 100% sure by excanging it with the head lamp relay.

If your car overheats while traveling at highway speeds, you've got other problems besides the coolant fan not coming on in slow traffic. At highway speeds, it's the natural flow of air from the moving car that cools the engine. However if it only overheats when idling and the fan isn't coming on, then that may be the only cooling problem you have and fixing the fan has solved your problem.

if you're sitting, you're probably going to overheat no matter how well your cooling system is functioning, when its hot outside
thermostat might be stuck closed, fan motor could be burned out, relay could be bad, water pump could be bad, etc.
