ANY time you have a flashing "check engine" light before it stays on steady, it means you have what is called a 'class A' misfire. This means the type of misfire that WILL result in catalyst damage if the problem causing it, isn't fixed soon. On that particular vehicle, the most likely cause will be a bad spark plug, or coil on plug. It is less likely to be a bad fuel injector or low compression on one of the cylinders, so go to either a mechanic with a scan tool, or the Ford dealer, and have them pull the P03** code, and fix it right away. Be sure to use ONLY Ford/Motorcraft parts for the repair, or you will have issues later on. Hope this helps.

I agree with going to Auto Zone to get it checked , it could be nothing though, mine came on a couple , once when my girlfriend put 89 octane gas in it , and another when the gas cap was not on properly, once on a misfire , and one time when the check engine light malfunctioned...They have code readers that are reasonably priced , I gave about 85 dollars for it , but I can reset the check engine light when it comes on , then check it again when it comes on again , very much worth the money.

IS it the service engine OR the check engine light? they both have different meanings. service engine is just a reminder that maintenance is coming up, they are set to light up at certain mileage intervals. The check engine light comes on if there is a problem with the engine. If this is the case you can take it to auto zone and they will pull the code for free.

It could be just that service light, take it to Auto Zone they will check for computer codes free. If it's just service reminder disconnect negative battery cable and turn lights on for a minute this drains voltage stored in computer. Turn lights off reconnect battery turn key to on(not start) let set about three minutes this lets computer reset. Reset clock and radio and you should not have problem with light unless you leave gas cap loose this will also cause light to come on.

It could be anything, but it probably means you have a severe misfire or something that will do serious catylitic converter damage.

As the only professional answering this question, I feel I should emphasize the following...

Auto zone will read your codes, but this is no substitute for a proper diagnosis by a qualified technician.

Therefore If the code indicates a rich exhaust gas situation on a particular HEGO (heated gas oxygen sensor) that does not mean you need to buy a new 02 sensor. It means you need to have a tech see why it indicates a rich signal.

Could be a lot of things,
best to get a "OBDII" from your local auto parts store, you can "rent" it for approx $180.00 "you get it back in full" and check to see what "codes" come from it, or you can simply get a OBDII diagnostic from your local mechanic...cost about $ 70.00.

Either way get the OBD checked asap!
OBD= On Board Diagnostics/"Brain" or computer of the vehicle.

Best wishes!

Go to Auto Zone, Advance Auto parts etc. They will plug a computer into the diagnostic port and tell you the problem.
