ALL humans are superstitious to some degree or the other and practice it in different ways. Who would not wear a charm if they were told it would make them rich or cure them of a disease ???

Superstitions cannot be always be dismissed as something stupid. Some do have strong scientific basis dating back to ancient times.

For example, some cultures forbid the plucking of flowers or leaves or fruits from a plant or tree after sunset. That is because plants and trees exhale CO2 or Carbon Dioxide at night which can be harmful to a human. Also, plants or trees host sleeping insects and reptiles which might feel threatened and attack a person plucking a leaf, flower or fruit.

In another cultures, sleeping with your head towards the North or South is avoided. That is because sleeping in such a posture can affect the polarity of human blood and brain cells, which also have a positive or negative or neutral electronic charge.

Certain people do not eat or drink anything a couple of hours before, during and after an eclipse. Sounds silly but in fact, the body's geo-magnetic balance is disturbed during an eclipse and so is the electric charge on food particles. Hence, eating or drinking at that time can cause severe health problems.

Personally, I see superstition as some way to avoid danger or damage to our body or health, finances or something precious to us.

Not walking under a ladder: Yes, maybe because a ladder is always near something being built or made and walking below it can endanger the workman or cause something like a couple of bricks or a bucket of paint to fall over us.

Superstitions were invented to protect us and need to be interpreted rightly. Not blindly. So, go ahead and believe in what you want. There will always be a logical explanation .

I am not superstitious but I would avoid walking under a ladder because something, (or the ladder) could fall on me.
I grew up in rural West Virginia and I know all kinds of people who have superstitions.
I have a brother who was about half a mile from home when a black cat crossed in front of us and he actually went about 30 miles around to come in the other way.
I do agree that people who do not have a strong faith are more superstitious than those who do. People with faith tend to trust God to look after them and if they think about it surely they believe that God has more power to control their life than a black cat. Btw, my brother was never a believer in God.

If someone was up a ladder working then obviously I wouldn't walk under it in case they dropped something on my head!
But otherwise I'm just the kind of contrary sod who would walk under a ladder just to prove a point!
In fact, I deliberately throw spilt salt over the wrong shoulder specifically to annoy superstitious colleagues.

No I don't. Heard them all but it would be a bit of bad luck if the window cleaner dropped his wet cloth on a passer by.
I refuse to be emoptionally held back by superstition.

Personally I do not care for anything but my wife is very superstitious and will not allow me to tread on a cut lemon or any such things on the road. All these things are in mind and if one has a strong mind and will power nothing on the earth can effect them except physical & verbal violences (like nagging & crying).
