Drive stick shift (aka manual.) Accelerate gently. Shift early. Avoid hard braking and complete stops whenever safe and legal. Read the traffic ahead so you can avoid slowing down any more than necessary. Leave your windows up and use the A/C - except below 25-30 mph, when you should shut off the A/C and open the windows (wind resistance is not a major factor at these low speeds.) Of course, I'm assuming you maintain your car properly, keep the tyre pressures correct, etc.
Works for me. I once averaged over 35 mpg over a 1500 mile trip, with an average speed of 65 mph, including gas stops (I hit well over 80 mph many times) - and this in a Ford Focus 2.0!

Diesel is a little greater costly than petrol in the united kingdom. Diesel autos are slightly greater costly petrol autos. diesel autos have no ht leads , no spark plugs , no coil , or digital timing. Diesel autos are slightly greater slugish at pulling away , reving up etc , yet as quickly as going deisels out carry out petrol at say accelerating from 50 mph to 80 mph. Diesel engines will do greater mileage in a life-time that petrol. street tax and emmisions could be diverse in keeping with make of vehicle cc engine etc. especially choose for diesel if youpersistent greater on motorways , long distance , petrol if greater around city.

If you are only going a short distance you just walk or cycle that will save you petrol and money, plus it will give you exercise.

Drive at a slower speed. Avoid driving during busy hours because stop and go is a real fuel burner. Keep tires inflated at recommended pressure. Plan your shopping trip route so you don't waste time and gas. Walk short distances. Hope this helps. Good luck.
