About 30 seconds to one minute is all you need. Engines prefer to warm up while under light load, so simply drive gently until it finishes warming up. This also saves gas and pollution, and gets you where you're going sooner.

No, this comes from older cars with problems they will not run until warmed up, due to bad choke. The only thing to help motors on cold starts is Synthetic oil or oil additives, they leave a coating on engine parts, so the upper part of engine isn't dry when you start it.

With modern fuel injection all you need is 30 sec and up to 2 minutes for the real cold days. Drive of gently for the first mile or two, this is the best form of warm up. If you want to save wear and tear on cold starts use a block heater and synthetic oil for the winter months.

there is no need to warm the car up, it is actually better to drive it lightly until it is warm because this will allow the tranny to warm up as well. If you let it warm up at idle then the engine is getting warm and the tranny is staying cold.

When your engine is cold there is more friction, this causes wear,at idle (800rpm)there is less wear than driving it at 2000rpm,Most engine wear is at start up till 160deg.So let it warm up for longer engine life.

Generally, you only need to run it long enough to get oil pressure (about 5 seconds). If your windows are iced up, I would run it longer to defrost them.
