The kiwi fruit, Actinidia chinensis, was at first
known as Chinese gooseberry. New Zealand
turned out to be a favorable climate for growing it, and,
possibly because gooseberries are not a very
popular fruit, a different name for it was wanted. Anything from New Zealand, including
the people, may be referred to as kiwi, because
kiwis occur only in New Zealand and are rather
a popular symbol of the country. The fact that
the kiwi fruit is brown and hairy may have had
something to do with the name, too.

Found this site http://xenon.stanford.edu/~rsf/kiwi.html , apparently in the 1960's New-Zealand farmers wanted to sell the fruit and make sure people knew it was produced in New-Zealand rather than in China so they called it a kiwifruit, since the kiwi bird is associated with N-Z and New-Zealanders are often referred to as kiwis !
