Display. It is an English word that is a synonym of monitor. I guess they use it because Microsoft wanted to.

Maybe you could do us a favour by rephraising your question. Otherwise a monitor is a monitor whether on MAC-based systems or Windows-based systems. Operating systems do not determine hardware terminology. A monitor is an output device that enables visual display of the current contents of the computer's main memory. What I believe you are asking about if I'm not mistaken is probably GUI - Graphical User Interface for systems like Windows and TEXT mode for DOS and some versions of LINUX.

All ritey , this might be hard to explain.

A monitor is the universal term used to describe the visual display unit of the system. The fact that you are using windows xp is irrelevant.

The terms you are referring to are the active windows seen on the screen. The following phrases are often used:

Desktop - refers to the background of the xp menu interface

Window - A open active window that displays the contents of files and search commands

Browser - Used to connect and view web pages

Display - The overall term to describe the visual aspect of the monitor.

I hope this helps
