nathan,

Don't really know if you mean NE US or UK so things could differ by your local. Most saw mills can make timbers, grade stamped or unstamped, to your order. You might want to check with the building authorities about grade stamping, sometimes you are not going to be able to build without a stamp [or some "authority" grading it] on the timber.

Because timber is a extremely heavy bulk item and transport is a fair portion of their final cost finding a local source is a good idea.

I'd start by looking in the local phone book under "Sawmills". If they cannot help you or you don't have one handy my next step would be to local lumber suppliers. Again, if they don't supply timbers they'll know where to go. [you could always google, "sawmill" "timbers" and your local, city or region]

There is a big market for resawn lumber and timber from reclaimed timbers so don't forget to look that way.

I live in NE Ohio and have two small saw mills [one is a band saw and the other is a circular saw] within 6 miles. In addition, within two miles I have a guy that takes down old wooden barns. He reconditions the timbers and resell complete "kits" for making timber frames homes. Whenever I need a timber I go down a select for his stock of odds and ends.

I have two good Timber Framing books here one by Tedd Benson and the other by Steve Chappell. Good reads with lots of good advise.

Try Howarth Timber of York.
They supply and deliver any timber, cut to size and are a lot cheaper than the superstores.
