It is the red flag that goes up, when something is just not quite right. It is a warning, a survival instinct.
It is a learned trait, children are not born with it.
A young child will walk off a cliff or touch a hot stove, they do not know fear until adults tell them.
A young child will walk up to strange dogs, walk into the swiming pool, a parent has to teach.

Fear should mean you're in danger and the purpose is self-preservation. It should release adrenaline (sp?) to give a boost to flee or fight.

Fight or Flight. Man needed to stay and win-out over his adversaries. Or, if the odds were stacked against him, he needed to be fast enough to outrun his captors.
Fear starts the adrenalin flowing through your body and the heightened ability enables man to choose which one, fight or flight! Hit harder or run faster. And I do not agree that it is a learned behavior. It is instinctual. @8-)

Fear makes you more alert and prepares the body to either fight or flight. The awareness also permits you to be aware of the dangers about you

The purpose of fear is self preservation. It's part of the flight or fight response. If we didn't have fear of certain things then we would most certainly not live as long. We would have no "fear" of death or dangerous things!

Fear is a part of human life. It cannot be separated from within us. It makes us complete and it plays a vital role in this life to ensure certain things to be avoided and and us alert of danger incoming. No matter how brave the person is, he/she still having fear inside him/her. It is impossible that no one has no fear. Eventhough the series of Fear Factor is a program to challenge one's fear, however those who won the program cannot be proudly declared that have no fear in their life. What we can say is that they are limited to fear that usually people frightened of. Fear has two impacts in our life, which is negative and positive. Nevertheless, we always see fear as something negative in our lives. Well, sometimes it is but not always. In certain situation, we really need no fear but we just couldnt make it right as ho we wanted it to be. Instead of becoming braver to face the condition, we are more prone to become a coward. But why is it like that is the question. For the positive side, fear is needed to give us alert and know the danger that we are facing. Without fear, we would definately on the risk of danger that we would never thought of. It is important that we carry fear with us as a limit in our life to determine our strength, but it is not always convenient to put everything with fear. Just imagine that we do not have fear within us, we would have been acting something stupid that is totally absurd such as touching fire with our bare hands, swimming with fearful predators in the water, play with deadly machine and so on. Maybe this question would strike your mind, how about the world famous crocodile hunter, Irwin can still swim or closed with so many harmful animals? U might be thinking that why i said that why i said that his action is kinda stupid. Well im not telling that he is stupid or not right, but it is just not right or stupid for us to do such thing without any protection set up. He had all that. But he wasn't that lucky and he died of the sting while swimming with the so called monster fish. His attempts were great and he was so lucky to swim with all and catched the crocodiles but not until the latest incident. That was reluctant and we lose such a great hero for Discovery Channel. What i can conclude is he is brave than normal individuals in this thing but this is just a part from his life, it is not overall. Therefore we cannot judge that is fearless to everything. Just imagine that we as a normal individual doing such act or try to be as a stuntman as in movies we seen, aren't we stupid to do all these? It is danger! We should notice this before we go further. Without fear in all individuals, i guess the mortality rate in the world would increase so much. But with fearless feeling, we able to gain more experience than normal individual do. Just imagine you are a stuntman or the late Irwin. You would be able to live or stay close with the wildlife. You might be able to do sommersault with motorcycle on the air and etc. As the conclusion, fear has a very big impact in our life and lifestyle. It is all depends to our consideration on how to control fear for us to proceed something that is in plan or not in plan list. If we manage to control fear wisely, i am sure that our life is much more productive and stable. That is why think twice has to be applied in each of our step before we make it as further a undertaking. Whatever we sow is what we will get in the final. That is a called fear and it is not vivid that we have always apply in our live. Hope you can understand. Good luck and take care!
