So we went to war over a commodity, imagine going to war over coffee.

The war had to be sold to the American public, that's why the invasion of Iraq was painted as part of the war on terror. The Bush family is so allied with the oil industry and big business in general that they see money making opportunities everywhere. Undoubtedly, much money could be made by bombing and then rebuilding the infrastructure, de-nationalizing the oil industry, and allowing varied businesses to establish themselves under the protection of a US occupation. But the reason for the invasion may have been more ideological than anything else. Saddam was an enemy of Israel and neoconservative theory held that a establishing a democracy in the middle east could stabilize the region.

a lot of the more liberal pukes would still figure a way to bash the republican efforts to stay in a conflict, for whatever reason, but the American public (being the unconscious natural resource smashing ,environment bashing group we are) would go into a panic, no more cheap gas...people would be forced to use mass transit as commuting back and forth to work would be too cost prohibitive and casual driving would be a thing of the past...hybred/new fuel type autos will rush into production but be limited on range and/or ultra expensive, there will finally be less vehicles on the road because the cost of running one will be so expensive, young kids wont be able to afford getting around so parents will drive them or they too will be taking busses...then big business will figure a way to create a monopoly on the new fuel source, and the chain continues...and some of us will be saying 'do you remember when gas was a quarter a gallon and you had to wait in even/odd lines to get it and people were shooting each other over it (1972)...' btw, had it occoured to anyone out there that 9-11 could have been a plot hatched here, everyone knows in times of conflict (war) it is as easy to pass spending bills worth billions and billions...and some of that wrecklessly spent money will fall back into the hands of special interest groups...friends of big business...and all it cost was a few lives, airplanes, and buildings (mere collateral damage) how else could that much money ever be approved for spending...the media sensationalizes the whole event, the general public goes back to waving our flag and being patriotic,we declare war, we can pass bills for more spending of unheard of amounts...Im sure you all know we dont live in the most moral or honest country in the world, from the top down...big money and protecting our countries image is a dirty business...

Then I would say the Bush administration and the republicans in general since they have been in power for the past eleven years, really failed the American public for letting it get to this point without investing in alternative fuels. If that was all true, it still wouldn't be justified to go to war, it would actually make it a worse reason. We really would be nothing but bullies at that point.

No, it wouldn't be worth doing a war for oil.
We coulda used the cash we spent on Iraq to devolop an alternative fuel. The oil will run out eventually anyway.

With the money spent so far on this INVASION the government could have purchased a hybrid car for every citizen and still had change left over and we could have cut our oil dependency by more than half while we researched alternative fuels. But I guess your right, killing American soldiers is a better idea.

I do not believe we went to Iraq about oil. But I do not see any good reason why the world should allow Iran or radical Islam to gain control of Iraqi oil fields. And I recognize our need for oil.
I do believe if the war were about oil they should have told us that fact, however.
Bad example, Dreamer. I would definitely go to war over coffee.

Going to war with any country for owning a natural resource of that country is nothing short of robbery. It is not justifiable.
