to do the math, you need improper fractions in the lowest common denominator.
A.
1 1/4=5/4=15/12. and 2/3=8/12. 15/12-8/12=7/12. (positive)

B.
3/4=3/4. 1 1/2=3/2=6/4. 3/4-6/4=-3/4. (negative)

C.
1 2/3=5/3=15/9. 2 7/9=26/9. 15/9-26/9 = -11/9 or -1 2/9. (negative)

The order of the numbers isn't a factor when working with fractions. You need to convert the the fractions to their common denominators as well as the compound fractions. For the first one you have 1 which is the same as 4/4 and 1/4 so you add those and have 5/4. To subtract that from 2/3 , which is a smaller number you need to find the lowest common denominator (aka the bottom number). For 3 and 4 that number is 12 so you end up with 15/12 minus 8/12 which ends up as 7/12. The next one is very simple as 3/4 minus 11/2 is 3/4 because if you think about it as money instead of fractions it's like seventy five cents (3/4) minus a dollar fifty (1 1/2) which is seventy five cents or 3/4. The last one is a little tricky but not too bad. the lowest common denominator for 3 and 9 is 9 so you have 9/9 which is 1 and 6/9 which is 2/3 that gives you 15/9. The next number in the equation is 2 7/9 or 18/9 (2) plus 7/9 which ends up as 25/9. Now you take 15/9 and subtract that from 25/9 and it's 10/9. Hope this helps.

A. 1= 4/4 + the 1/4 = 5/4 - 2/3. Now you need to find the common denominator on the bottom. 3 * 4 = 12 therefore whenever changing a fraction make the same change to the top as the bottom. 5/4 * 3 = 15/12 and 2/3 *4 = 8/12. Then you have 15/12 - 8/12 = 7/12!
The other two are done the same way.

1 1/4 minus 2/3 = 5/4 minus 2/3
commonize denominators (3x4)=12 ergo
15/12 minus 8/12=7/12

3/4 minus 1 1/2=3/4 minus 3/2
commonize denominators (2x2)=4 ergo
3/4 minus 6/4= -3/4

1 2/3 minus 2 7/9=5/3 minus 25/9
commonize denominators (3x3)=9 ergo
15/9 minus 25/9= -10/9 or -1 1/9

The answers have to be negative when a larger number is subtracted from a smaller number
