The name Mitsubishi (三菱) has two parts: "mitsu" means "three" and "bishi" means "water caltrop" (also called "water chestnut"), and hence "rhombus", which is reflected in the company's logo. Another translation is "three diamonds".

The Mitsubishi logo has it's origins in the 1870's, when the company built its first ships - the three diamonds are supposed to represent a ship's propellers. The first Mitsubishi company was a shipping firm that Yataro Iwasaki established in 1870. In 1873 it took the name Mitsubishi Shokai. The name Mitsubishi means 'three rhombi', (or three diamonds) which is reflected in the company's logo.
The Mitsubishi emblem is a combination of the Kasane Sangaibishi (the kamon of Yataro Iwasaki) which was 3 vertically stacked diamonds, and the Tosa clan crest of three Kashiwa leaves which were arranged in the same pattern as the diamonds today.

The Mitsubishi emblem means a quality line in ecstasy from about 1998 to 2001. Many great nights out in Edinburgh on those little buggers :)
Of course I now live in the UAE and have a clean drug free lifestyle which is far better for my mental and physical health (and nothing illegal going on) but jeez, them were the days.
