Start with "The Godfather of Soul", James Brown. I also recommend, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Booker T and the MGs, Sam Cooke, The Spinners, and any act on either the Motown or Stax labels.

Anything on Motown is my favourite.
I'd recommend Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, The Supremes. The Temptations etc.
Also Marvin Gaye.
Any decent music selling outlet would have a Greatest Hits CD of some description which would be a good place to start.
