Lately I have seen a lot of talk around dual reality, in movies and TV-series. What is this mental disorder called? And how can someone live out a own life in the head while they really are at a mental institution? How common/rare is this?

I believe that it may be referring to the idea that thoughts and senses are different aspects of reality and cannot be merged into one.

A person can sense the world through the body's sense receptors, but his mind must interpret the signals it receives from those receptors. So, each person's reality is based on how he interprets the signals he receives.

There is a dualism there, one of the mind and one of the body.

I don't believe that dual reality is a reference to any mental disorder. Rather, it is a statement of the human condition.
