To convert the Cartesian equation of the line

2x + y = 5

into polar form use the identities.

x = r cosθ
y = r sinθ

We have:

2x + y = 2rcosθ + rsinθ = 5

r(2cosθ + sinθ) = 5

r = 5 / (2cosθ + sinθ)

There is no need to solve for θ. As θ ranges over its values the line is drawn.
