Were old players "grandfathered" into being able toretain their flappless helmets after the rule change? What year did the rule change?

I'm not sure about the year it was changed or the "Grandfather" thing, the last guy I remember wearing one was Dave Winfield. Of course, John Olerud wore one in the field as well.

The last player to wear one was Tim Raines with the White Sox. I'm not sure when the rule change took place though.
