It is a revelation, a work of art, a piece of history.

But remember that it does not mean that every person or party was acting inhuman or barberic at the time. Rizal was exploiting the ones doing wrong, and their unjust deeds were enough to make it bigger than it seemed, even if it were to be a small number of people. All of the Spanish colonies during the Spanish Empire were like this. Very similar. Rizal did not just write about what was going on in the Philippines, but he was exploiting the Spanish Empire's bad deeds.

Friends of mine say that if Rizal had lived longer or was born later, that he would have done the same thing towards the Americans and written about the things they did. Besides this, it is a great book.

I can't remember anymore the exact details of the story but I remember myself crying after finishing the book. I think the part when I cried was when Basilio was running after his mother in the woods, and she locked herself in a hut because she thought Basilio was a soldier seizing her. Basilio tried to get inside by climbing a tree and passing through the window. By the time he got in, his mother was unconscious, so he hugged her... imagine that, he was longing for her for so long and he finally found her. Then he fell asleep, just as when Sisa woke up, and for the first time, she came to her senses, she was mentally normal again, and recognized her own child. She was crying and hugged him tightly. When Basilio woke up, his mother was dead... I began crying at this part. Until he met Elias and suggested that he burn the hut where his mother is.... that was soooo difficult for Basilio. I remember after reading the last page of the book, I was crying as if I absorbed the pain the characters were going through. I felt so bad, the book was CATHARTIC!

Going back to your reaction paper, the book was a contemporary novel. It reflected the Filipino society that time. It was a very meaningful story, and a powerful propaganda as such, because it spoke of the truth. Rizal gave the readers a hole through which they can see what's really going on in their society, and a lot of people was able to relate to his book that time, that's how he touched them. He aroused the deepest emotions in the readers, I for example, felt the biggest pitty for the characters like Sisa, and thinking that it happened for real to someone during his time, is what made me cry. I cried out of pitty for those who suffered cruelty and injustice during the spanish era. To some, it might have been rage or fury, especially the rebels and patriots alike during their time who were able to read it. That is what made his works so special.

a good way of publishing a propaganda. it has reflected the way the spaniards and how christianity has enslaved the filipino people during their stay in the philippines.
