Unfortunately you cannot take responsibility for your dad and his health. I understand that it is scary for you - have you told your dad how much it worries you? It is sad that you dad has been given a second chance and is choosing to throw it away. The best thing you can do is make sure that you don't follow his example.

Yes, he is killing himself - he will snuff it, sooner rather than later.

I had a heart attack four years ago.
I never completely stopped these two favourite pass times. In fact I was doing both a lot more than I ever did.

I couldn't understand my behaviour in the face of all the evidence and medical advice until I read about it someplace.

It said that many people who have had a life threatening illness, especially men, often react this way. It is a form of denial where we wish to believe that we can still cut it and are still vital, virile, young and healthy.

I felt better after reading this, reassured that my behaviour was not mad but understandable and quite common. It helped me come to terms with my heart disease and the kind of healthy life changes that I needed to make.

I eventually packed in the fags and cut down my drinking, I eat better and walk more. If anything, I feel more vital, virile, and younger than ever - not a spent force, but 'manly'.

Print this off and show your old man. I bet he will recognise himself and it might encourage him to take his head out of his **** and face up to his situation. It worked for me - it might for him. All the best.

Here is the harsh facts and the harsh reality.

Sadly he is killing himself - just tell him you don't want him to die and ask if he will try to give up the smokes and the drink (or at least cut down) as you would like him to stay around for much longer and you think the smokes and the drink will bring his death much closer more quickly - then say will you do it for me Dad? Shame him into it.

Being offered a heart bypass should have given him another chance, and he's wrecking that chance by being so irresponsible. Yes, he is killing himself and also being selfish as he has a family to consider. Can you not have a chat with him and explain your fears. It may give him the push he needs to take the necessary action and cut down, or preferably stop. Good luck.

Sorry darling..... he's slowly killing himself already. Old habits are hard to stop.... but it does not hurt for you to have agood deep talk with him. Tell him of your fears and worries, then perhaps he will realise how badly it is affecting you and those who love him. Hopefully he will try his best to quit booze and fags.

Just promise yourself never to be like that - drinking and smoking as much. Take care. x

he may have a heart attack, stroke or other serious illness as a result.
Would he be interested in reaching a compromise and cutting down?
Perhaps you could find some leaflets or information detailing the risks and lay the facts down in front of him.
