1.As soon as you start the computer press F8.
select Safe Mode.
Start/Run/ msconfig
startup programs
delete unneeded programs.

Check up your RAM usage and deleted unneeded programs from startup.
3. Use Advanced WindowsCare2 Personal (FREE) from http://www.iobit.com . Easy to use and clears most junk from your computer and check the start up items

you should know witch program installed on your computer shows you ERROR.
try to re-install it.
if it's from Explorer or SVCHOST or somthing like that first check your system for Viruses and Spywares(Download AVG from http://free.grisoft.com)
then if your system was not infected then try repair your OS.
in XP it has a selection when you boot your system with CD.
in Vista I didn't try it yet.
